The Paléosite, the most modern Prehistoric Centre in the world

Designed under the expert guidance of the leading world Neanderthal specialists and under the scientific control of professors Y. Coppens and B. Vandermeersch, the Paléosite is the most modern Prehistoric centre in the world.

Located on the very spot where the last Neanderthal girl (dating back 35 000 years) was discovered, the centre is equipped with the latest technology for image processing, scenography and special effects.

In the 2000m2 indoor, air-conditioned Centre you are invited to meet Neanderthal Man. Your adventure begins with the discovery of an archaeological site, then on foot or by lift, you will go into the Centre to discover the displays and activities which will take you back 15 billion years in time to the centre of the Big Bang and the first appearance of life.
On the programme: film shows on giant screens, 3D animations, integral scanner, arm wrestling with a Neanderthal and facial morphing!!

The adventure continues outsiderieur 

Discover the outdoor trail, in a life size area recreating the living spaces of prehistoric man: habitats, mammouth cemeteries, animals and from 2012, homo-sapiens and neanderthals.
The Paléosite is an unforgettable experience for both young and old!


Opening hours

Open from April 1st in the morning to November 3rd in the evening for individual visitors.
Open every day during this period except Mondays and Tuesdays outside of school holidays. .

• Aril/May/June and September from 10.30am to 7pm.
Open every day except Mondays and Tuesdays outside school holidays.
Ticket office closed from 12.30pm to 1.30pm and at 6pm.
• July/August from10am to 8pm non-stop
Ticket Office closes at 7pm.
• October : open only at weekends from 10.30am to 6.30pm and every day during the November school holidays.

"The European Neanderthal” Exhibition (Neandertal l'Européen)

On display in the main hall of the Paléosite Centre in Saint-Césaire, this exhibition takes you to meet a fascinating stage of humanity which existed long before we did and disappeared 30 000 years before our age.
> 150 m² of exhibits
> 75 posters of various sizes
> 30 panel displays
> 1 experimentarium area containing 18 facsimiles: pebble tools, scrapers, denticulate and two-sided tools etc.
