The three towers of La Rochelle - Saint-Nicolas and the Chaîne built in the 14th century, and the Lanterne from the 13th and 15th centuries, are vestiges of the town fortifications.
The Tour de la Chaîne and the Tour Saint-Nicolas both palatial residences, constituted the defences at the entrance to the port.
Those who lived within the walls of the Tour de la Lanterne, which served as a lighthouse, sea mark and prison, marked their presence with the graffiti that can still be seen today.
