| Flats, yawls, pinnaces and other sloops are all types of vessel making up part of the Charentes fleet. A fleet that is highly diversified (fishing, pleasure boating, racing and regattas), the construction of which for the most part dates from the first half of the 20th century. |

Protected Boats
|
| Although certain types of ships such as bridged long boats, dundees and lighters have disappeared, the smaller vessels used for fishing, mussel rearing (flats, yawls) and oyster farming (sloops, lasses) often owe their continued existence to the action of individuals or associations keen to preserve this maritime heritage. |
Naval Shipyards
|
| Local naval construction, for fishing as for pleasure sailing, has long demonstrated its skill and know-how. The département still counts a dozen wood shipyards which regularly issue small boats and yachts.
Among these is the shipyard in Rochefort, open to visitors and entirely given over to the building of an identical replica of Hermione, the frigate that carried La Fayette in 1780 to the American insurgents fighting for their independence. This is a real challenge, as the carpenters and shipbuilders use plans, techniques and materials conforming to those used originally by their predecessors. |
