| The lighthouse was built in 1905 on the La Coubre headland, from which it takes its name, to the north of the Gironde estuary. It was built to replace a previous building built in 1895, eaten away by erosion and that finally collapsed in 1907. Originally, the current lighthouse was 2km from the coast. But with continuous erosion, it is today only a few hundred metres from the sea. |

Characteristics
|
| 64 metres high, built in two-coloured concrete (red upper part and white base), and slightly flared at the bottom, it is one of the most powerful lighthouses in France, with a range of more than 50km. It also has a second light, about halfway up, in a small construction called a ‘barbette’. |
Panorama
|
A spiral staircase with 300 steps offers the reward of a splendid panoramic view over the Gironde estuary, the Cordouan Lighthouse, the Pointe de Grave headland, The Gironde coast, the Côte Sauvage, the Arvert peninsula and, further north, the Ile d’Oléron. The La Coubre Lighthouse is open all year round.
