The département counts more than a hundred museums. Contemporary art, local traditions, maritime areas, archaeology… all the high points of the history of the Charente-Maritime are open to you through the museum collections.
The history of the great
The birth or presence of illustrious names in our département gave rise to the creation of a number of centres: the Maison Champlain (House of Champlain) in Brouage, the Musée Napoléon (Napoleon Museum) on the Ile d’Aix, and the Maison de Pierre Loti (House of Pierre Loti) in Rochefort. This town also houses the Marine Museum. In La Rochelle are the Musée du Nouveau Monde (Museum of the New World) and the Muséum d’histoire naturelle (Natural History Museum).
Local history
Some centres concentrate more on local traditions. The Maison paysanne de la Coiffe et du Costume (Museum of Country Hairpieces and Costume), in Grand-Village-Plage on the Ile d’Oléron, displays costumes, hairpieces and the traditional habitat of Oléron. The Moulin des Loges (Loges Mill) at Saint-Just-Luzac is an old marsh mill on the Seudre. Exhibitions tell the story of the people and their activities that have shaped the marsh of the Marennes basin over the centuries.
