| Human presence in Charente-Maritime goes back to the prehistoric period. Since then, through occupations and population movement, traces and vestiges of these ancient times have reached us, such as the famous Gallo-Roman arenas of Saintes. Archaeology lets us uncover some of these treasures and enable them to be seen by whomever wishes to do so. |

The Paléosite of Saint-Césaire
|
| The largest Prehistory Centre in the world, the Paléosite was built on the site of the archaeologic dig where the bones of Pierrette were found in 1979 – a young Neanderthal woman in her twenties... 35,000 years ago! The site, using ultra-modern museographic and scenographic techniques, offers visitors a journey back in time, going right back to the Big Bang. A fabulous way to discover the history of humanity.

The Gallo-Roman Site of Le Fâ
|
| Aerial photographs taken in 1975 revealed the presence of a Gallo-Roman port town on the Gironde estuary, the site of the modern-day commune of Barzan, in the hamlet of Le Fâ. Port, habitations, spa, forum, temples and public roads were brought to light. Exhibition rooms have been set up, the discoveries are on public display, and tours of the dig are organised by archaeologists.
