Flavours and Savours in Charente Maritime
The Ile de Re Potato

The Ile de Re Potato

The new potato appears on the Ile de Ré at the beginning of Spring. Its unique flavour, tasting of the seaside, makes it a veritable emblem of regional products, justly sought after and appreciated.

A favourable environment

The island has outstanding growing conditions; the chalky, dry and sandy soils are swept by the sea breezes, in a mild and sunny climate. It is on these lands, between Ars and Saint-Martin, that a cooperative of thirty-odd producers cultivate this famous tuber following strict and intangible guidelines.

A valued savoir-faire

The potato of the Ile de Ré is the only variety to have been given an AOC, awarded in 1998 in recognition of the efforts of the growers to produce a potato of constant high quality. They follow rigorous specifications regarding germination, sustainable farming, grading and commercialisation. The potato is harvested before maturity to limit the presence of starch.

There are 5 varieties: the Alcmaria and the Starlette, with a melting and slightly sweet flesh; the Roseval, Charlotte and the Amandine, with a firmer flesh. The Ile de Ré potato gives guaranteed satisfaction and all the pleasure of discovering the taste of an outstanding local product.
