Pineau is a fortified wine, made from grape juice. Its production zone, an Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée, is limited to the Charente-Maritime and Charente. Once the grapes have been pressed, one-year-old Cognac brandy of at least 60% ABV is added to the must, which stops fermentation. The pineau is then aged in oak casks.

An ancestral tradition
|
The origins of Pineau go back to the end of the 16th Century when, according to legend, a vintner accidentally tipped his grape must into a barrel of Cognac, that he then abandoned.
A few years later, this barrel was needed again because of an abundant grape harvest, and inside he discovered a tasty beverage, limpid and sunny like the land of Charentes. Ever since then vintners have respected this tradition, which has become over time a veritable savoir-faire and a guarantee of quality and enjoyment.

White pineau, rosé pineau
|
There are two types of Pineau: a white, aged for a minimum of 1 year, with flavours of honey, fruit and spices, and a rosé, made from different types of grape and aged for a minimum of 8 months, developing more fruity flavours. Both however, are also made as Vieux and Très Vieux (more than 5 and 10 years of aging), their delicious aromas revealing all the generosity of an exceptional terroir.
