The marshes of Brouage, Moeze and Yves in Charente-Maritime

The marshes of Brouage, MoEze and Yves

Charente-Maritime is home to three major marshes: Brouage, Moëze and Yves. They are three exemplary sites placed under the control of the Conservatoire du Littoral, an organisation that watches over the protection of such large natural areas of major ecological and landscape interests.

The marsh of Brouage

Located on the former golf course of Saintonge, it has long been one of the major salt marsh zones of the Charente coast. These marshes are home to more than 150 species of bird, including, unusually, white storks. Did you know that the region has the second-largest number of storks in France after Alsace?

The marshes of Yves

Along the seafront, between La Rochelle and Rochefort , the nature reserve of the marsh of Yves was created in 1981. Here dunes, silt foreshores, marshes and lagoons blend together. These marshes are an important nesting site for ducks and small waders. There are two observatories for birdwatching.

The marsh of Moëze

At the extreme West of the marsh of Brouage opposite the Ile d’Oléron, the nature reserve of the marsh of Moëze is an ideal spot to discover water birds. Managed by the Ligue pour la Protection des Oiseaux (LPO, League for the Protection of Birds), this 229-hectare marsh plays host to thousands of migratory and wintering animals.
