A holiday tradition

A holiday tradition in Charente-Maritime

The coast of Charente-Maritime is a time-honoured holiday destination. The many ‘Belle Epoque' residences of Fouras, Châtelaillon, Saint-Palais-sur-Mer, Charron, Saint-Georges de Didonne, La Tremblade, La Palmyre … bear witness to this holiday tradition.

A rich military and maritime heritage

A rich military and maritime heritage

The rich historical past of La Rochelle, a major trade port and one-time Huguenot capital, and Rochefort-sur-Mer that was for many years the main military arsenal of France, also make the Charente coastline a unique destination.

Activities, events and produce

Activities, events and produce

The many soft sandy beaches that line the coast are ideal for watersports and board sports. Walks, bike rides, horseriding, tennis and so on are also very much present in the region of Royan and elsewhere. During the summer season, the communes on the coast are also the setting for a very large number of events for all ages. The Charente coast is also reputed for its very high quality produce, such as Marennes-Oléron oysters and Charron mussels.
