The state forest of Saint Trojan

The State forest of Saint-Trojan

At the extreme South of the Ile d’Oléron the State forest of Saint-Trojan stretches over more or less 2,000 hectares. About 8km long, it is the largest on the island. Planted mainly at the beginning of the 19th century – especially on the dune massifs – this coastal forest has the objective of protecting the houses of the island a little further inland, as well as stabilising the dunes.

A highly protected forest

The State forest of Saint-Trojan is mainly populated with maritime pines and holly oaks. With its own ecosystem, this forest is protected by current regulations: the ‘Natura 2000’ plan and status of ‘Area of Unspoiled Nature’.
Owned by the State, the forest is managed by officers of the Office National des Forêts (ONF, National Forestry Office).
This forest offers a number of footpaths and a network of cycle tracks, as well as a very pleasant fitness trail at Vert-Bois. A number of facilities, such as wooden picnic tables are also available.
