Forest of Charente Maritime

The forest of La Coubre

Planted in the 19th century in the communes of Les Mathes and La Tremblade, the State forest massif of La Coubre is a protective coastal forest. Its role is above all to limit the invasion of the sands on the peninsula of Arvert and stabilise the dunes.

The largest

The forest today covers more than 5,000 hectares and is the largest State forest of Charente-Maritime, and is mainly a forest of maritime pines and holly oaks. The Forêt de la Coubre shelters a very varied wildlife, notably with deer, roe deer and wild boar.

To discover on foot, by bike or on horseback

A cycle trail threads its way through the forest and the coast, over about thirty kilometres between Saint-Palais-sur-mer and Ronce-les-Bains. It is an ideal means to go deep into the forest and breathe in the beauty of the site. Between La Palmyre and le Phare de la Coubre (La Courbre Lighthouse), the track provides access to the wild coast and the splendid beaches. There are also purpose-built mountainbike trails.
For hikers, there are a large number of marked walking trails as well as a long-distance footpath, GR4, linking Royan to Ronce-les-Bains, passing through the Forêt de la Coubre.
There are also horseriding trails, provided by the ONF (Office National de la Forêt, National Forestry Office) as well as a number of horseriding clubs.
