Forest of Benon

30km East of La Rochelle in the commune of Courçon lies the forest of Benon. This forest massif of 132 hectares is part of the Parc Interrégional du Marais Poitevin (Interregional Park of the Poitevin Marsh). Classified as a hunting and wildlife reserve, the forest is protected as a rare, rich and fragile environment. It is mainly a forest of oak, ash and maple.

Varied vegetation

The warm climate, high sun exposure and the warmth of the limestone has given the forest of Benon a very diverse vegetation. Flora typical of the Mediterranean is very much present, as well as a few rare species, such as the blood geranium or orchid. The forest is also home to a very varied wildlife: wild boars, rabbits, squirrels, pine martens… as well as a large number of birds of prey such as tawny owls.
There is also a playground, and footpaths that go right round the forest, so you can appreciate all its charm and tranquillity.
