A département between land and water, the Charente-Maritime counts four rivers that lead to the ocean through as many estuaries.

The estuary of the Gironde

estuaire de la gironde

To the South of the Charente-Maritime, the estuary of the Gironde is considered as one of the largest in Europe. It blends a unique ecosystem – the only continental river with wild sturgeon – and a major maritime and military heritage.

The SEvre Niortaise

The Sevre niortaise

The Sèvre Niortaise crosses the Poitevin Marsh. Here, the digging of canals and locks made it possible for this river to become a major trade route. Today, this multitude of waterways makes up the aptly-named Green Venice.
