To the South of the Charente-Maritime, the estuary of the Gironde is considered as one of the largest in Europe. It blends a unique ecosystem – the only continental river with wild sturgeon – and a major maritime and military heritage.
The Charente and its estuary
The Charente and its estuary cross the region of vineyards, cognac and wines of Saintonge, and pass magnificent cities with a rich history.
The Sèvre Niortaise crosses the Poitevin Marsh. Here, the digging of canals and locks made it possible for this river to become a major trade route. Today, this multitude of waterways makes up the aptly-named Green Venice.
