A historic park
In the middle of the town, the medieval fortifications shelter the Roman church of Notre Dame de Surgères. This religious building is one of the most beautiful of Aunis and Saintonge, with a rich façade and mysterious crypt with frescoes. A little further, along the fortified wall, lie the vestiges of towers and doorways of old prisons. This architectural ensemble is surrounded by a superb park with centenarian chestnut trees - a delight to wander through. It is an ideal spot for family picnics.
On the edge of the Poitevin Marsh
Surgères also has a very rich natural environment. On the edge of the Poitevin Marsh, the town is a perfect departure point for the Venise Verte (Green Venice). Surgères, ranked first of sports towns with fewer than 10,000 inhabitants, offers access to a wide variety of physical activities, including tennis and mountain-biking.
