In the middle of the Charente-Maritime, in the region of Les Vals-de-Saintonge, Saint-Jean-d’Angély is a historic town full of charm. Built on the site of a Gallo-Roman villa, Angeriacum, this town of Angers has a superb abbey built to protect the relic of the skull of Saint John the Baptist. This Royal Abbey, superbly renovated, is today the town’s cultural centre. |

On the road to Compostela
|
| Saint-Jean-d’Angély became an important place of veneration, and therefore a major stopping point on the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the town flourished, thanks to fluvial commerce and the eau-de-vie trade. Private luxury residences and timber-framed houses in the winding alleys of the old town bear witness to this illustrious past. |
A green countryside
|
The Boutonne, a living and winding river, runs through the ‘canton’ (county) of Saint-Jean-d’Angély, a great place for fishing. Green and a little hilly, the countryside around Saint-Jean-d’Angély is extremely pleasant. It can be explored via the five walking circuits and 3 mountain bike trails.
