Perched on a rock, the medieval city of Pons is a must to discover, with, in the centre, a 12th century dungeon, the only remaining vestige of the old fortified castle. All around are small streets full of history – adorned with turrets, arches, stairways , a chapel and private luxury residences – wind their way down the hill. Alleys join the lower town where pilgrims on their way to the town of Santiago de Compostela stopped at the Hôpital Neuf (New Hospital) founded in 1160 by Geoffroy III of Pons. Today the Hôpital des Pèlerins (Pilgrim Hospital), this monument was classified a UNESCO world heritage site in 1998. |

The Seugne
|
Running through the town and surroundings, the Seugne is a true haven of peace. The banks of the river, green and fresh, are ideal for restful country walks. It is also a river that is particularly rich in fish, a paradise for fishing enthusiasts. Local gastronomy, with a large number of regional specialities, is also much reputed. |
