First of all it is essential to have a valid Charente-Maritime individual fishing permit. There are several types of permit, notably for under-16s and for visitors who can have ‘holiday’ permits (valid for 15 consecutive days) and day permits between 1 June and 30 September. These allow you to fish without any surcharge in nearly all of the rivers and streams in the département as well as in most of the lakes, ponds and reservoirs. They are available in fishing tackle shops.
Specific regulations
The fishing permit details what you have to know in terms of the authorised equipment in addition to rods and the minimal sizes beneath which the fish must be put back in the water.
Fishing permits from other départements
If you have a fishing permit from another département, this only authorizes you to fish in public rivers and streams with a single rod. You can fish in all the rivers and streams in the Charente-Maritime if you pay a contribution to the département or if you buy a ‘halieutic club’ revenue stamp which will also authorize you to fish in 59 other départements in the south and west of France.
