For several years now, a major restoration project of the navigable waterways has been under way, bringing the canals to life and giving them back their soul, and offering an unrivalled insight into a picturesque chapter of French history. Waterway tourism has developed on these canals equipped with amenities. There are two sorts of boats to hire, those that do not require a permit and barges for river cruises.

If you hire a boat that does not require a permit this allows you to go on a trip of up to several hours (boats not designed for living on) or a weekend, or even a week or more (liveaboard boats, barges).
