Surfing and bodyboarding in Charente Maritime

Surfing / Bodyboarding

For the past few decades a wave of surfing followed by bodyboarding has hit the Charente coast. The variety of the coastline – with sandy beaches and rocks giving different types of waves – and the ruggedness of the Ile de Ré and the Ile d’Oléron mean that the Charente-Maritime is a French beacon for surfing and bodyboarding.

Spots all along the coast

There are a good fifteen or so well-known spots along the coast, such as Les Huttes or Saint-Trojan on Oléron or Le Petit Bec on Ré, not to mention all the wild coast between La Palmyre and la Tremblade. And of course there are spots here – it’s up to you to discover them!

Differences

Wave sports are great fun and get your adrenalin pumping. With surfing you choose between a longboard (2 to 3 metres long) that is stable and comparatively bulky and a shortboard (less than 2 metres) that is rapid and easy to manoeuvre. Bodyboarding is certainly more accessible, and involves riding the wave lying down on a foam board, allowing you to do a certain number of figures.

Taking lessons

You need to be in good physical condition to do these sports. You also need to know the ocean well before throwing yourself into the waves. The best way to learn is no doubt to follow a lesson with one of the Écoles françaises de surf (French surfing schools), where the training is carried out by qualified instructors. This quality label, accorded by the Fédération Française de Surf (French Surfing Federation) obliges clubs and schools to respect strictly defined criteria.
