Among the many possible trails in the Charente-Maritime are three particularly attractive long-distance routes developed by the Départemental Council. |
| |
The coastal path
This route follows most of the coastline in the département. It is a way of discovering the Ile de Ré, Ile d’Oléron, Ile d’Aix and Ile de Madame, following the coast between Esnandes and Châtelaillon, a part of the Charente estuary and then the Arvert peninsula and the banks of the Gironde. |
During the Middle Ages many pilgrims used to pass through the département on their way to Santiago de Compestella. Today, the Charente-Maritime is giving this legendary route a new lease of life. With its new marker posts in Saintonge stone, you will be able to discover the many pilgrim halts to be found in the département: the church of Aulnay, l’hôpital Neuf de Pons (New Hospice of Pons), the church of Saint-Eutrope de Saintes and so on. A special IGN map of the Compostela pilgrim route in Charente-Maritime is available free of charge from the Départemental Council.

The Cabariot-Le Chapus route
This route runs for 15km between Cabariot and Brouage, linking the Charente valley with Bellevue lock, very close to the coast. This former railway has been fully upgraded into a very special walk through varied, protected countryside. It is worth noting that a plan is currently being studied to extend this route towards Marennes and the Seudre basin. |
